Reason to SMILE #72: A LISTENING EAR
“Are you listening to me?” a frustrated mom screams.
Stunned by the unexpected outburst, her inattentive child responds, “Well, I am now!”
Have you ever been there? It truly is disheartening to discover that after you’ve given instruction to your children or told them something important to remember, the kids weren’t actually listening to you. Even more aggravating is when you’ve mentioned something over and over and over again yet no one in the household seems to remember you saying it even once. The urge to stand in the middle of the dining room table and scream at the top of your lungs, “Why aren’t you listening to me?” is difficult to resist.
We all want to be heard, don’t we? Parents want their children to listen to the wisdom gained from their own childhood mistakes and life experiences. Children want their parents to listen to their interests and share in their life discoveries. Wives want their husbands to listen to their feelings. Husbands want their wives to listen to their opinions. Bosses want employees to listen. Employees want management to listen. Friends want friends who will listen. And on and on the list goes.
Yes, we all want to be heard. Do you know what that means? It means that you and I have countless opportunities to share SMILES simply by listening to those around us. Listening is one of the easiest SMILES there is to give. Okay. So that may sounds like a fortune cookie but it’s true! You could make someone’s day just by taking the time to sit down, look him or her in the eyes and listen to whatever it is that person needs to say. I bet when your time together is over, you’ll both end up with a SMILE.
Put on your listening ears and start spreading the SMILES today!
