Reason to SMILE #111: KIDISMS VOL. 4
I was playing the game “Just Words”, exercising my brain by trying to beat the computer (that I believe cheats quite frequently!). My younger son was looking on and offering his help. On the computer’s turn, the word “woe” was played.
“What’s that?” my son asked.
“Woe,” I responded.
“I didn’t know it was spelled that way,” he said.
“You’re thinking of ‘whoa’ like slow down. That is spelled w-h-o-a,” I explained.
“Well, what does this word mean?” he asked.
“It means great sadness,” I answered.
“Use it in a sentence,” he said.
“Ok,” I replied. “I was filled with woe because my dog died.”
To that, my son candidly reminded me, “Mom, we don’t have a dog.”
And so ended the vocabulary lesson for the evening.
You can always find a reason to SMILE when you’re talking to a little kid!
